My Why

Simon Sinek wrote a book in 2009 called Start with Why. In it, he argued that the best companies know WHY they do what they do. He calls it the golden circle: if you know and understand WHY you are doing what you do, the WHAT and the HOW will naturally follow. He believes this is why companies like Apple are so successful, why the Wright brothers were successful in creating the first aeroplane despite being undereducated and under-resourced and why Martin Luther King Jr was so impactful in starting the civil rights movement. I initially got into medicine with the idea of helping people. Of course, there are many ways that people can be helped, and neurosurgery is such a small, specific way to help just a small group of patients.

There is a Japanese concept referred to as Ikigai, which refers to something that gives a person a reason for living and a sense of purpose. This is found when a person finds what they love to do, what they are good at, what the world needs and what they can be paid for. For me, neurosurgery fulfils all of the above; it is my God-given calling and purpose in life. Neurosurgery is a high-stakes profession. Unfortunately, we can't help everyone; we can’t save anyone. I promise to always do my best and to let God do the rest.

I find nothing more rewarding than being able to tell a patient's family that after hours of surgery, their loved one is out and doing well. All the long years of studying and training melted away, and this patient's life has been saved because of it. The feeling of seeing a patient on death's door being discharged home to their family, seeing them as an outpatient after being rehabilitated and returning to work, is why I do what I do, and it cannot be fully explained. It makes up for tough cases that do happen; this is entrenched in our field.
